The Suck-up. This is someone who never misses an opportunity to gush over a top writer or name drop people like Ev Williams and Dr. Yildiz. They also like to write glowing love letters to the platform and to specific publications.

The Shit Disturber. This person is always itching for a fight. They like to puncture big egos, point out hypocrisy, and write about subjects likely to provoke contentious debate in the comments section. Pearl clutchers, beware! There are two kinds of shit disturbers. The first kind is sincerely committed to truth and justice. The second kind is motivated by the desire to get attention and make money.

The Virtuous Victim. This person occasionally covers other topics, but their number one subject is themselves: the more traumatic experiences, personal tragedies, diseases, disabilities, mental health issues, bad relationships, dysfunctional family members, and injustices they’ve endured the better. Although they don’t always spend a lot of time telling you what a good person they are, if they have a lot of followers (and they usually do since everyone enjoys a good train wreck) their fans are great at polishing the VV’s halo for them.
