The last time I was at the doctor, I received a print out that detailed my medical condition. There were few surprises, but one particular phrase under “active problems” brought me up short: Obesity (BMI 30–39.9). I knew I could “stand to lose a few pounds” but, obese? That was a shock.

Elastic waists and vanity sizing had enabled my blissful ignorance. Mirror and scale avoidance could no longer hide the truth. There it was in black and white with a doctor’s signature. I am the “O” word, and not the good one.

A Google search on the advantages of obesity doesn’t turn up much. Most health officials agree that obesity is a condition to be scrupulously avoided for numerous health reasons, including but not limited to:
