Well, Melissa, this is another new one on me. I wonder if the same writer considers transgender people in the same light. I’m guessing they don’t.
I recently saw a FB post from (I think The Other 99%) criticizing people who dress as someone of a different ethnicity on Halloween. The comments were mostly from people (Mexican, East Indian, Asian, etc.) who said they weren’t offended by this and that they saw it as appreciation for their culture rather than an insult, unless the costume was intentionally intended to be insulting.
It’s this kind of rigidity and mining for offense where none is intended that inspires Independents to veer right on Election Day. You can’t achieve inclusion by insisting that everyone stay in their own corner. Thanks for your logical and important essay.
