We left in 2017 chiefly because of ageism in hiring which is not as much of a problem on the East Coast. We are in Easton, PA, which is a college town, so it’s pretty liberal. Close to both NY and Philly without the hassles of living there. The Poconos are half an hour away, the Shawangunks two hours. We got a 1940s brick house with a slate roof and twice the land we had with our California bungalow in Alameda. It has a fireplace, a dining room, a front hall closet, and a screened in sun porch which we didn’t have before. The property/school taxes are under $5,000 a year. We paid less for this than we did for our CA house in 1988 and it’s already risen $110,000 in value. We thought Alameda was perfect, but we just didn’t know what we were missing. Spectacular spring and fall. Beautiful winters and summer. We love it here. It would be cheaper in Texas, but we don’t want to live in Texas.
