This is so much more complicated than it seems. A lot of the negative comments come from women. Why? Maybe they too were beautiful when they were young but lacked the resources film stars have to prolong their beauty. Their remarks are prompted by bitterness and jealousy. Or maybe they were never thought beautiful or were frustrated by being constantly compared to women in magazines and films and found wanting. Women are told, “You’re no Beyoncé,” or Marilyn Monroe, or whoever is considered to be a “10” at the time. It’s not surprising that many people take pleasure in watching someone who once had it all lose it when they never had the luck to be born beautiful themselves. Beauty opens doors that are firmly closed to the rest of us. Many of these actresses would never have gotten top roles if they hadn’t been beautiful in the first place. Their faces have been their fortune. There are many talented actresses but few who are talented and also stunningly beautiful. The other thing is that we are attracted to beauty and take pleasure in looking at beautiful people. Seeing them age means we too are aging. Nobody likes to be reminded of that, but it beats the alternative!
