This Boomer bashing is getting really old. A lot of people my age have never recovered financially from 2008. I know dozens of people who drained their savings, endured long-term unemployment, lost their homes, and ended up having to change professions, IT managers now working as high school teachers and pet sitters. Ageism in hiring is putting a generation out to pasture far too early and a lot of times it’s Millennials who are responsible for screwing over employees, because they’re at the head of some of the most successful corporations now. The median net worth of Americans 65-74 is $266,400. That includes retirement savings and any equity they have in their homes. Most Boomers will run out of money long before they die. There are 69.5 million Boomers. I don’t know a single one with the attitude you describe. Most of us are just as screwed as any Millennial, probably more. At this point 1 in 4 Millenials has over $100,000 in savings. That’s a pretty good launch pad to a serious retirement stash. The big difference is, you have another 30 or 40 years to improve your situation. Even better, if your parents die before they run out of money, it will probably go to you. According to Forbes magazine, “A study shows that Millennials will hold five times as much wealth as they have today and the group is anticipated to inherit over $68 trillion from their Baby Boomer parents by the year 2030. This will represent one of the greatest wealth transfers in the modern times.” So knock off the Boomer bashing. My generation is as deserving of pity and praise as any other. Millions of people have millions of different stories. Assigning a blanket attitude to an entire generation is as ridiculous as it is unjust.
