There was a lot of controversy at the time the books were released from the religious right that the books were glorifying witchcraft. I know someone who refused to have anything to do with them for that reason.
Calling her a violent transphobe is a bit of a stretch. I have never heard her advocate for violence against anyone, let alone physically attack them. As near as I can tell, she defines gender differently than you do. So what? So do most people.
