The Road to Wellville was made in my hometown at the Mohonk Mountain House resort. Its setting is so spectacular, it stood in for Heaven in a recent TV series. I was disappointed when the film came out. Everything looks muddy and drear. I don’t consider it a cult film as much as a massive bomb and a missed opportunity to take advantage of a spectacular location. My favorite cult film is Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, script by Roger Ebert (the film critic) including the immortal line, “You’re a groovy boy. I’d like to strap you on sometime.”
