The reaction shots are great! What Smith did was wrong for a lot of reasons beyond the physical pain inflicted on Chris Rock. It’s profoundly selfish to behave that way, especially at a event that means so much to the people involved. It was like a drunk at a wedding throwing up on the preacher and then giving a rambling, nonsensical speech.

His antics upstaged everyone else, stealing the spotlight from the winners, hosts, nominees, and other presenters. In Regency England, his actions would have damned him as “bad ton” which is a term for someone at the top of the social structure who behaves as if he belongs at the bottom.

If you look at Rock’s joke, what he actually said and without making the assumption that he knew of her medical condition and meant to target it, it’s not that insulting, if at all. He compared one beautiful woman’s shaved head to that of another, and he said he loved her. Oh, the humanity! Not everyone has the time or interest to keep track of all celebrity ailments. I didn’t know about her illness and I read a lot about movie stars. I imagine her self-promotion isn’t on Chris Rock’s daily agenda either.

It blows my mind that so many people are stunned that a comedian made an irreverent joke at the Oscars. Duh! It’s what they do. Why do you think they had him prevent a boring category like best documentary? It was to spice things up.

You’re right about one thing. All three of them will make money off this. Chris Rock’s comedy tour is sold out, which it wasn’t on Sunday morning, and the Smith’s, who were already making a business out of their family business, will milk this for all it’s worth.

Nobody’s asking if Jada’s okay because she didn’t look too bothered by the whole thing. What I’m surprised at is the lack of concern for Chris Rock. I’ve been slapped in the face myself. It happened over 50 years ago and I’m still traumatized by it. It’s humiliating and demeaning. For it to happen so publicly must be devastating.
