The law presumes innocence until proven guilty. It’s a law that protects innocent people from being locked up. Unfortunately, sometimes criminals go free, too. Our freedoms always have a price. If Gabby were a child, it would have been a different story, but as an adult woman, her fate was in her own hands. She had the opportunity to extract herself from the situation and chose not to do so. She was treated the same way a man would have been. The police officers didn’t say, “Now, honey, this isn’t a safe situation. You need to come with us.” She admitted to domestic violence and her finance was asked if he wanted to press charges. He didn’t. The only people who could have prevented what will unfortunately, most likely, turn out to be a tragedy, is the couple themselves. If mental illness is a factor for both, they both deserve our sympathy.
