Some of these interactions you describe may or may not indicate racism. Sometimes it’s just curiosity and can also be a friendly overture. The karaoke thing puzzles me. Everyone in a karaoke situation gets a microphone shoved in their face regardless of skin color, and it certainly isn’t based on whether or not they think you’re a good singer. Part of the fun of karaoke is when someone gets up to sing and is awful. I know racism exists and is systematic in our society, but what you’re doing here is pushing people away. When I read stories like this one, I get the impression that everything I say and do around a black person will be analyzed and evaluated, and since the assumption these days is that all white people are racist, I will be labeled as such no matter what. You don’t like to be prejudged, because nobody does. The message I’m getting from what you’ve written is that you want white people to avoid interacting with you altogether. It seems like you’re saying, don’t look at me, don’t ask me questions, don’t try to get to know me, don’t include me in social activities. People of different racial and ethnic backgrounds don’t get to know, love, and respect each other, by walking on eggshells all the time. Isn’t improved communication and understanding the goal?
