She’s an 83-year-old British aristocrat who said nothing that most people her age and in her station in life would have ever thought was racist. A racist would have either assumed the black woman was a servant or pretended she didn’t exist. She would not have made an effort to make conversation with her.

We are all shaped by our experiences and or background. Lady Hussey was clueless and insensitive but there’s no surprise that someone in her position might be. To categorize her as a raging racist is an exaggeration.

All stories like this do is discourage people from trying to make a connection with those different from themselves.
