Many non-profits are established as a way of enriching the founders. Wealthy families use them as a way of getting 6-figure salaries for their do-nothing kids. They’re a great tax dodge, too. The charities doing the best work are the ones we’ve never heard of because they don’t have big advertising budgets, their directors aren’t fixtures on news programs, and you won’t see them selling t-shirts on Facebook.
