Madonna is either absurdly ignorant of the Catholic faith or joking. She has been criticized by the Catholic Church hierarchy for fetishizing sacred symbols in her videos and concerts, but she’s never been formally excommunicated. The church rarely does this anymore and usually it occurs when a priest does something major conflicting with church doctrine. Since she hasn’t been a practicing Catholic in decades, it would be pointless to excommunicate her. Even if she were excommunicated, once would be sufficient.
