It’s traditional for the bride’s parents to pay for the wedding, not the bride. This is an outdated concept based on the notion that the bride’s family should provide financial compensation to the groom’s family for taking the burden of supporting the bride off their hands. Since most women today are capable of supporting themselves, it shouldn’t still be a thing.

My sister and her husband have three daughters. They set aside a certain amount of money for each one. They could use it as a budget for their wedding, or opt to take the money. One had a modest wedding and pocketed the difference. Her sister had a civil ceremony and a family dinner and pocketed most of it. The third hasn’t married yet. I’m not sure what the deal is if she never does. In my generation, my parents made my unmarried sister executor of their wills so she got an additional percentage of their estate.
