It's just another symptom of our sick society. Humans are driven by the fundamental need to worship somehthing greater than themselves. Evander Kane is a demi-god to some. He makes even more obscene amounts of money for his bosses. That $49 mil is a bone they threw him. Of course, the sports team management doesn't want to provide Mr. Kane with help and advice on how to manage that money. If he understood budgeting and investment, he might retire and then where would they be? Top actors make a lot of money, too, but their movies also employ a lot of people. Just look at the credits at the end of any film these days. You'll be sitting there for five full minutes at least. Another factor is that a lot of creatives, athletes, and other high achievers are bi-polar. The spending sprees are a big part of that. Often these people avoid treatment because their mental illness is a component of their success. Manic phases can be very productive. As Kim Kardasian once said in an interview, medication would change who Kanye West is, so he doesn't take it. It ought to. The right cocktail of meds can calm the crazy without killing the motivation and creativity.
