Is this a Medium-owned publication you’re talking about or just a publication on Medium? Anyone can write whatever they want and self-publish it. There are over 10,000 different publications on the platform, many releasing dozens of stories each day.

I may be wrong, but I don’t think Medium promises the kind of oversight you’re looking for on all of those publications, just the ones they own and operate. The majority of the gatekeepers are unpaid, so it’s not realistic to expect the standards that a print publication with a full-time staff can provide. This isn’t the Lancet by a long shot.

In addition to publications, there is a lot of self-publishing going on that doesn’t pretend to adhere to any but the most basic standards. Many people use Medium as a place to learn how to write, write better, or how to write for a specific audience. I understand if it doesn’t meet your particular expectations, but there is some outstanding content here along with the dreck.
