Is June Still the Most Popular Month for Weddings?
Wedding traditions that aren’t as favored as they used to be
June used to be the most popular month for people to marry, but it isn’t anymore. It’s still in the top three, but September is now the month with the most weddings. June is in second place and October in third.
Why did June use to be considered the luckiest month for marriages?
The tradition of marrying in June goes back to ancient Rome. The month was named after the goddess Juno who the Romans associated with marriage and childbirth. In Celtic tradition, June is also significant because it marked the end of the waiting period for couples, who began courting on May 1st, to make it official by putting a ring on it.
Toss the bouquet, the garter, or toss the whole idea?
Brides have thrown their bouquets into crowds of single female wedding guests for hundreds of years. Whoever caught the bouquet was supposed to be the one who got married next.
Although this is rarely the case (the woman who caught the bouquet at my wedding 39 years ago is still single), the tradition is still observed by approximately 75% of American brides.
