I’m so sorry that happened to you, Rebecca. Americans are frequently labeled racist, but the most shocking examples I’ve seen were by Europeans, one Swedish and two German. In America, people will rarely out and out say, “I don’t like black people,” or “I don’t like Asians.” The racism here, at least in the northern states, is more subtle. I also have seen people (like my Irish grandmother) disparage groups like Italians, but make exceptions for people she likes. I’m sorry the Swiss lady couldn’t appreciate your kindness. It might be too much to expect it to “cure” her, but she might have begun to see that “they” are not “all alike” which would at least have been progress.
