I’m not sure where all that anger is coming from, Maya. We all have our agendas. I don’t have a novel to sell, so right from the start, we have different motivations. We also each see Medium in our own way.
I would never presume to tell you what to write about or that you should leave the platform because the opinions you express and how you use Medium are not in keeping with what I think they should be. However, I would hope you’d extend me the same courtesy.
We’re all on different journeys. I’m still figuring out what kind of writing I want to do. I’m not a copywriter because I got sick of writing things I wasn’t interested in. Here, I can write what I want and read what. I work with other writers and discuss issues with them. I’ve made friends. I rarely rant in the comments section because that accomplishes nothing.
Since you were so kind to offer me advice, here’s some for you: if you want to build a brand that appeals to a wide range of readers, don’t be unpleasant to other people. It takes qualities other than good writing to be successful at it. People skills and likability are important, too, and everything you write on the Internet is forever. I can still pull up stories I wrote for c|net in the 1990s. Good luck with your book.
