I’m not saying it’s not possible, I’m just saying, most people didn’t “go there”, not even in their heads, as that quote about Bilbo proves. Society is still processing and evolving its attitudes toward sexuality and probably will continue to do so. It’s terrible for people to feel they have to hide who they are, but I think our society has become over-concerned with labeling everyone and themselves.
Perhaps the more progressive stance is to strive to see our commonalities rather than make an issue of our differences. Seeing others first as fellow human beings and next for the talents and abilities they bring to the table makes more sense to me. Who you partner with, worship, or vote for should be far down the list. It’s a worthwhile discussion.
