I’ll sign a card, but nobody’s deciding for me how much I contribute to a group gift. The best situation I had was when I worked at a law firm. Everyone got an ice cream cake on their birthday (flavor of their choice) from an upscale shop, which the firm paid for. There was no Secret Santa crap either. The owner, Susan, took us all to lunch at her private club and gave us gift bags. When Susan took a vacation, she brought us all back high-quality souvenirs, most of which I still have because they were worth keeping. Unfortunately, she got disbarred and we all lost our jobs. I miss those ice cream cakes.
