If Meghan and Harry had any illusions about how things would go with the royal family, they had only to look at the first season of The Crown. Prince Philip had to bend the knee, was denied the right to have his children bear his surname, and was forced to move from his preferred residence to Buckingham Palace.
Queen Elizabeth’s uncle David was also vilified for choosing Wallace Simpson over the British Empire. The Windsors believe that great privilege comes with great responsibility and that personal considerations should always take a back seat to duty. It’s not a life I would choose, and we can argue the right and wrong of it, but I think Harry and Meghan were terribly naive to assume they could do whatever they wanted without blowback.
