I wanted to join a gym so I could do water aerobics but I cancelled my introductory appointment when I realized I’d be getting the hard up sell on signing up for their expensive personal training program. I knew the sales pitch would be first class (the regional manager of the gym chain would be showing me around.) I also knew that everything they’d say would make sense (I’m over 60 and out of shape so it would be foolhardy to go solo). I wasn’t confident that my sales resistance skills could match their skills in persuasion. I now walk daily and it’s making a difference. Plus, it costs nothing but time.
