I think it’s the media and it’s click baiting that makes you think Hollywood doesn’t understand. They don’t know what will work so they’re experimenting.

Nobody knows what works until it’s tried. As ever, once something does work, everyone will rush to try to duplicate that success and most will fail. This is a new era and everyone is trying to figure out what audiences want and how to provide it in the most profitable way possible.

What William Goldman said about Hollywood in “Adventures in the Screen Trade” decades ago still holds true, “Nobody knows anything.”
