I think it’s good to think first before telling others certain things. Here are some situations where it makes sense:

1. It’s personal information that might trigger judgment and you don’t know if you can trust the person telling it not to gossip.

2. It’s a big writing project like a book or screenplay. Talking about it can diminish the fire you need to finish it. Silence builds pressure and pressure can motivate.

3. The story you want to tell is not yours too share. If your friend told you about an embarrassing or painful life event it’s best not to tell anyone else. If they didn’t make a point of asking you not to share, don’t assume it is okay. They may have been too upset to think of it.

4. A little mystery (as long as it’s not harmful or dishonest) is good in relationships. Besides, unless someone has just fallen in love with you, they probably don’t want to hear your life story. This is especially important when making new friends.
