I think it really matters which field you’re in and how big an employer you have. My husband turned 65 last month. His full retirement age is 66 and four months. He’ll qualify for a pension next year.

He has just been told he and seven other Agile coaches have to reapply for their jobs. They’ll be competing against each other, other candidates within the company, and outside applicants. “Is it a matter of performance?” he asked. His boss said, “No, we just want to see that we’re all on the same page.” Unh?

He and his colleagues had already submitted resumes, been interviewed, vetted, and selected. They’ve performed well in their jobs. Just last year, they got hefty bonuses. Now they have to go on a website and apply for their own jobs as if their boss didn’t already know their qualifications.

My husband and I are pretty sure he won’t make it. There are too many brownie points for the new boss if she can replace him with someone cheaper, get him off the health insurance plan, and avoid giving him a pension for the rest of his life. The worst part is, even if he keeps his job, he’ll be expected to report to Newark, NJ, involving the mother of all rotten commutes.

This is how corporate America treats its employees. No consideration, no loyalty, no compassion. It’s no wonder people are looking for a better way to live. You never know when the bastards are going to kick the rug out from under you.
