I suppose it’s possible a dog in that situation might escape injury by jumping free of the crash. That’s probably their thinking, if they are thinking at all. The choice to own pets is a complicated mix of selfishness and compassion. I’ve seen people bring dogs rock climbing, to super crowded fairs and events, and even to fireworks shows. I’m sure they proudly tell everyone that “Beau is my wingman. I bring him everywhere!” Yeah, well, maybe you shouldn’t. If Beau could talk, he might just as soon stay home once in a while.
