I lived in the SF Bay Area for over 30 years. Your "California Man" is only typical in certain jobs and industries. A lot of the people I know there are in survival mode. It's a beautiful but expensive place to live. Yes, there are people in high-pressure, high-earning jobs who can never seem to have enough. There are many more who are making do with what they have and struggling to keep it.
