I have a friend who lived in Hawaii for several years because her father was in the Army and stationed there. She and her siblings were often harassed and subject to beatings by classmates for being haloes. Of course, not everyone feels that way. My friend’s brother married a Hawaiian of native ancestry. They moved to California and have been living happily ever after for over 30 years.
