I found your essay astonishing, Victoria. Who are these people you work with, androids? Your idea of retirement is what sounds normal to me. My husband retired last year. I’ve been self-employed/semi-retired for years.

We read, go on hikes, see old friends, do stuff around the house we used to pay others to do, manage our money, watch some TV. Our only scheduled activities are exercise classes and doctor’s appointments. I write when I feel like it about what I want to.

I like to act, so a few times a year I’m in a play or independent film. I sell stuff on Poshmark and eBay to clear out clutter and make some mad money. I cook, and, oh, yes, I grow tomatoes. I don’t give a good goddamn if anyone finds me boring.

I’m doing what I want, when I want, with whom I want. As far as I’m concerned, I’m killing’ it. You will, too.
