I am Generation Jones. My two oldest sisters born in 1949 and 1950 had a radically different coming of age experience than their three younger siblings born after 1954. My older sisters were not hippies, not everyone was, but their college degrees were golden tickets directly from school into good jobs, and they were liberal arts majors. The music you mentioned was not what I listened to. I liked the older album rock bands but I did like Pretenders, Bowie, and Queen, too. I've always felt a little like a faux boomer. Now I know why!
