I agree, Ossiana. Chevron “fell victim” to the high cost of oil and made double what they did the previous year. Layoffs rarely happen because a business is truly struggling. Corporate America jumps on any excuse to jettison human workers because human workers are expensive, dangerous, and can be a pain in the ass.
My husband was part of a mass layoff following the 2008 meltdown. But his company was a huge HMO that wasn’t really impacted by the crisis. Weeks later, he and his co-workers saw jobs with descriptions very much like the ones they lost being advertised for lower salaries.
