Do you know your taradiddles (fibs) from your tippets (short ladies cape) or the difference between a bear-leader and an ape-leader? Can you tell a Corinthian from a Cytherean?

If not, never fear; I’m here to help with this handy glossary of Regency-era terms for different kinds of people. Study this, and you’ll be able to bandy words with the best of them.

Words to describe men

Bear-leader: A man employed to guide a wealthy young man on his Grand Tour of Europe.
Beau
: A good-looking man who is at the height of fashion. A trendsetter.
Blade: A fiery and fashionable youth.
Bond Street Beau: A well-dressed man who shopped for clothing and promenaded on Bond Street in London.
Buck: A pleasure-seeking young man of style.
Corinthian: Upper-class gentleman skilled in sports and outdoor activities such as rowing, riding, fencing, carriage driving, hunting, boxing, etc. Equally at ease in polite society.
Cuckold: The husband of a woman who has cheated on him.
Dandy: A fashion-forward man who is…
