And why I’m not worried about it

I have always been a little mystified by the appeal of Twitter. When it first came out, I had a job interviewer ask me what I thought of it. I said it would probably fizzle out pretty quickly. I’m no Nostradamus. The Oracle of Omaha’s job is secure.

Five years ago, I got the lame idea that people on Twitter would just eat up my political opinions and bon mots, so I cast aside my aversion to the platform (it always seemed kind of stupid to me) and started tweeting.

What I got back was nothing. Nada. Even the few friends that followed me weren’t interested in anything I had to say. After a couple of months, I stopped trying. Make those weeks, or possibly days. I don’t remember. But it didn’t matter because I didn’t have anything to promote anyway.

Now it’s different. I want people to read what I’m writing on Medium. I read a bunch of articles for tips and tricks to build my following on Twitter. I applied what I had learned, and guess what? Nothing has changed. The results of my concerted effort to boost my Twitter following have been equal to the results I got from years of zero activity and effort. I must be doing something wrong. You know what else? I don’t care.

I kind of hate Twitter and Twitter kind of hates me. That’s just the way it is, and I’m okay with that. I’m going to have to get famous some other way. Then I can afford to hire someone to handle my Twitter account who knows what they’re doing if it’s still around by then. Like I said in my job interview, it’s a flash in the pan. (I didn’t want that job anyway.)
