Great insights, Jeremy. I think listening is the best policy. Especially since a lot of white people in America don’t know any black people personally so they hadn’t been aware how big an issue this is. Time again you hear people say racism is a problem we already solved. They really didn’t know how pervasive racism is in our society. Now that people are being made aware, it’s important for them to listen, learn, and process instead of jumping into the conversation. I’m reminded of the college professor who asked the men in his class what precautions they took to guard against being assaulted when they went out. They couldn’t come up with anything. When he asked the women, they filled the board with examples. The men were stunned. They had no idea how different the situation was for women. This is a similar thing. Nobody likes to be told they’re clueless, but at least that can be fixed by listening to understand rather than listening to respond.
