Great insights, Christina. I once attended a dance competition in Texas that had this same vibe. It was disturbing. When my son was in grade school, the Bratz dolls were first introduced. A group of girls at his school dressed up as Bratz for Halloween. It was interesting to note that the mothers of girls in the class tended to react to this display as cute, while those with sons, like myself, were appalled. They looked to us like kiddie hookers. A number of the mothers of the girls dressed as Bratz were fashion-conscious and anxious to appear as youthful as possible themselves. I think perhaps this behavior is encouraged by mothers living vicariously through their daughters. I suspect that the desire to be desired themselves blinds them to how inappropriate these displays are.
