Great analysis! I wrote a story on Feedium in August guessing that Medium would look for certain attributes in the grand prize winner, only one being writing ability. I nailed six out of eight. I’ve submitted an update and am waiting on publication. The key to the whole thing was marketing. It was primarily a subscription drive. I originally was going to mention about straight white guys having no chance, but I decided not to go there. I think most people figured that would be the case anyway.
