Editors today tolerate many things that they didn’t in the past. (If there even is an editor involved.) Capitalization is something I used to complain about. Then I looked it up. The only hard and fast rule about capitalization is that it be consistent.

Who/that is a solid rule, but using that instead of who doesn’t obscure the meaning, so it’s not likely to be adhered to uniformly. Language evolves.

Teenagers used to go “to the prom.” Now they go “to prom.” Actors used to refer to things that happened “on the set.” Now it’s “on set.” I also see a lot of younger people write “anyways” instead of “anyway,” which has always been a sign to me of a lack of education.

These things will always bug me and I will correct them in my own editing, but I fear it’s a losing battle.
