During the Depression of the 1930s, people used the lives of Hollywood stars as vehicles to escape some pretty horrendous realities. For most people today, even during a pandemic, life isn’t nearly as rough. Technology has lightened our load and increased our leisure time significantly.
In the 1930s, only a rich person could take a cruise, get a massage, take a taxi, fly on a plane, go to a fancy restaurant.
Today, all that and more is within the grasp of ordinary Americans. Our lives and those of people who have a lot of money are more similar than they used to be. I agree, we don’t need them. I wouldn’t trade places with any one of them. I like my life and I wouldn’t want their problems.
