Catholics are forbidden from joining secret societies. It’s convenient because most of them don’t want Catholics joining anyway. I’ve always thought that, if you’ve got something to hide, forming a club is a funny way to do it. But as you noted, most of the secrets aren’t worth knowing anyway.
