Bogart was from a wealthy, well-respected family and raised as a gentleman. Such behavior would have been out of character. I suspect these anecdotes were originally printed in gossip columns, made up or inflated and planted to arouse interest in the picture and to also make it clear that there was no real-life romance between the stars. Bogart had taken a lot of heat for marrying the much younger Lauren Bacall and was probably anxious to avoid speculation that he was cheating on his adored wife.
