A lot of those FB groups are just cheering sections where anything remotely negative gets slapped down. When I orginally applied to write for Newsbreak, I was rejected. When I tried again later, they wanted proof of my dedication to local news. I thought about all the work involved in putting together a portfolio of examples and then having to keep it up with the event attendance and interviews and it wasn’t worth it to me. I’m not passionate about local news. It would be tough to pretend I was. When I used to write restaurant reviews, I got paid as well being reimbursed for my meal and that of a friend. I’m guessing Newsbreak doesn’t do that. So, if a restaurant review is ranked low, it could end up costing you money to write it.
