A lot of older workers are still getting laid off. Many of those who lost their jobs and homes in the Great Recession have never recovered financially. Not a lot of companies are hiring older workers either, so the idea that early retirement is a choice and all the boomers have fat retirement accounts isn’t the reality for most. They’re not working because they can’t get a job unless it’s in an Amazon warehouse and many older people aren’t physically able to handle that.
